Marangu day hike is a trip where you experience Mt. Kilimanjaro without getting to the summit, the hike will involve going up to the first camp (Mandara hut) which is 2720m above sea level and back down via the same route on the same day, here you will have to register and pay the park fee to get the valid permit in order to start the hike, the route to mandara hut is 8km long and it’s a 3 to 4 hrs hike in the rain forest where you will experience a dense forest with various plant species and you are lucky you may be able to spot blue monkeys and black and white colobus monkeys.
The distance from Moshi town to the Marangu entrance gate is about 45km and the drive is about 1hr, the Marangu entrance gate is 1879m above sea level.
MAUNDI CRATER
Maundi crater is also an attraction found in the same direction of the hike and it’s only 15minutes from mandara hut, this place offers a good view of Kibo and mawenzi peaks and also a good view of the Kenyan side in addition to Lake Chala and Lake Jipe
The crater was formed due to low pressure during the volcanic eruption instead of the magma coming out it formed a crater.
